A quality Transition Plan is all about success. Its ultimate goal is to ensure that the business and the owner moves from one state to the next. The best analogy I like is that it’s like juggling two snowflakes. Lee Seok-yeon, the head of the legal team, said, "I was surprised that President Roh Moo-hyun said opposition to the capital relocation was a non-confidence movement against him... We never mentioned the resignation of the president or his government while proposing the petition. In his six years with his employer, a top-shelf investment banking firm in Chicago, he'd never been treated this way before. To Brad, this was inexplicable, and a serious breach of faith. He could barely contain his anger. A week later, Brad appealed to his boss for a reconsideration of his bonus, but was told, point-blank, "It's not in the cards." With seemingly nowhere else to turn, Brad called us.
Annual bonuses and raises carry with them the same concerns,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although at a different time and in a different context. Nonetheless, you should consider the broadest possible range of "compensation" when, in the course of your employment, you receive disappointing news regarding annual bonus or raise. Anger and resentment never work in your favor. Threats inevitably backfire. Using your imagination, creativity and thoughtful, effective negotiation at these times will always work better for you.

At our law firm, when we first meet a new client, our initial interaction takes the form of a consultation (by telephone or in-person) usually lasting one to two hours. During this initial session, we strive to gain an understanding of our client (both as a person and as a professional), the problem or opportunity that initiated our client's call, and what it is that our client seeks, in the "largest picture." When we asked Brad what he was seeking, he didn't hesitate a moment: "To sue, get my bonus, and get the **** out." We were confident he didn't really mean it.
Consideration of "alternative forms of compensation" during times of disappointment can serve several purposes at once: to assuage your anger, to provide additional risk limitation, to improve your career positioning by acquisition of authority and resources, to exhibit your sophistication at negotiating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and to determine the meaning and origin of the disappointing compensation news. By broadening your perspective on potential year-end decisions and your notion of "compensation," you may in fact turn crisis into opportunity, and even advantage.

Advantages of Time: including increased vacation; flexibility of work schedule; decreased travel assignments; reassignment of a rather menial task to someone else; and increased staff or other resources.
With our counsel, Brad once again approached his boss, this time with a different agenda and using a different tact. Instead of trumpeting his disappointment, as his boss probably expected, Brad approached him in a way he didn't expect. What Brad did was tell his boss that he now fully accepted senior management's decision regarding his last-year bonus amount. It can be a more thorough restatement of your input offered in the meeting, or additional insights you gained after you had “time to think about it.”
That said, here’s a few things you can try, depending on what you really want to achieve (see questions above):
Q. My boss is an attorney and is very smart and yet very arrogant. I am a CPA and thru coaching sessions have learned that I am an introvert. When I am meeting with my boss and he asks me a question,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I like to take my time when I answer questions. I like to think about what I am going to say rather than just blurt something out. For my boss, this is a sign that I either don’t know the answer or he might have a better thought. So he interrupts me and doesn’t let me finish my sentence or my thought process. Sometimes he doesn’t even let me begin my sentence. This is extremely frustrating. I’m not the only one that he does this with. Others in my group have also complained to me about the same issue. What can I do as an introvert to let him know that I don’t appreciate being interrupted and I have good ideas as well. He thinks he is always correct or has the better answer. What can I do?
2. That your boss (in your opinion) does not think you have good ideas?
3. Point out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as neutrally as possible, that you were interrupted and would like to finish your thought. You don’t even have to use the “i” word; just say “I want to make sure you heard my complete response; I had not finished speaking…”
5. Consider the possibility that after you have allowed your boss to answer his own question and clarify his thinking, he might be more open to listening to what you have to say. So instead of trying to beat him to the punch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let him do his thing and then you do yours.
Many introverts find their natural style gets in the way at work; extrovert-type behavior is often more valued and rewarded in the workplace. How can you “be yourself” and still make yourself heard and get your contributions recognized? Below, I share my response to a question recently posed to me. Perhaps you can benefit from my suggestions as well.
Let me oversimplify to make a point – introverts need to think before they know what to say; extroverts need to talk before they know what to think. I suspect your boss, probably an extrovert, needs to answer his own questions, aloud, just to clarify his thinking. He may be using you as a thinking partner without you realizing it. In other words, he may not be interested in your answer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he could be interested in your ability to help him refine his own answer. On the other hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he could be interested in your answer and may not be aware that he is cutting you off. He probably assumes that you process information in the same way and that you will speak and interrupt as you see fit.

2. If you need even more time, just say it! I like to say something along the lines of “You know,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I have some preliminary ideas but they are not completely formed. Let me think about that.” Or “I want to go back and check my resources/refresh my memory before I give you an informed response.” If I am feeling very secure with this person, I keep it light and humorous and say something like “The wheels in my head are already spinning on this one; I’m waiting for them to finish before I give my answer.”
1. Buy yourself some thinking time by asking clarifying questions. Get your boss to expand on his original question. Show off your introvert listening skills. If he quickly answers his own question, ask questions about his answer.

Maybe today, in our career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we need to take stock of what we are doing and determine if we enjoy our jobs. Maybe we need to look at what we are doing and be sure it is pleasing to God. Maybe we need to take our career and look for ways to make a difference to others we work with and help increase the bottom line for our organization. Maybe today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we need to put in a good days work to honestly earn our pay.
We may find out when we do look back we didn’t do all we felt we should have done. We may find out when we look back we wasted a good amount of time on the computer, watching television or just chatting with friends. We may find when we look back we didn’t really accomplish too much. We shouldn’t get too upset about this because today is our opportunity to make a better day.
Maybe today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in our relationships with others we need to decide to sit down and spend more time with someone who is in need. Maybe we need to look for opportunities to create a relationship with someone new. Maybe we need to decide to be more kind and helpful to our loved ones. Maybe today we need to include God in our relationship so He can work through us to help others.

We all can look back on yesterday or the day before and find things we wished we would have done or not done. We can think about things we should have said or not said. We can decide if we had a productive day or not. We can review the day and see if we accomplished things in our life and if we were on track for what God wanted us to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Maybe today, in our finances, we need to decide our first earnings need to go to God. Maybe we need to be more careful about how we spend money. Maybe we need to look for ways to increase our income and cut back on needless spending. Maybe today, we need to go to God to help us be better money managers and look for opportunities to give more and spend less.
Maybe today, in our health, we need to be more aware of what we put in our mouths. Maybe we need to get out and do some type of physical exercise and find ways to stay mentally alert more. Maybe we need to decide to go to bed earlier so we can get more rest. Maybe today we need to remember our bodies are God’s temples and we need to take care of them.

Maybe we need to reach out to Him all during the day rather just when we think we need Him. Maybe today we need to thank God more and remember how great and holy He is.
